Everyday, my grandfather takes a bus to Chinatown and spends most of his day there.  He has lunch, socializes with his friends at one of the many associations (benevolent societies which are often related to a specific surname and only accept male members), and keeps himself busy with different errands.  When he needs to rest, he retreats to a room he rents, located in the middle of Chinatown.

This project was started so I could learn more about my grandfather and my family’s history.  In many ways, I am also learning about the community in Chinatown, how it has changed, and the way of life there.  My grandfather represents a generation that is quickly disappearing.  What will happen to Chinatown when this generation is gone?  What will it look like?  Who will strive to preserve what to many is a secret world?
